Long Beach Turkey Trot Kids Run, 5K, and 10K – A Great Way to Start Thanksgiving Day!

Web BannerBefore sitting down at your beautifully decorated dinner table with flowers from Allen’s Flower Market, get your exercise in by signing up for the Long Beach Turkey Trot with a kids run, 5K, and 10K. This is a great way to burn some of those Thanksgiving calories that will be consumed later in the day.

There are various race times for this event, starting and ending at the Belmont Olympic Pool located at 1 Bennett Avenue in the Belmont Shore area of Long Beach. More than 6,000 runners are walkers are expected at this 11th annual event. Parking information can be found online as well as maps and additional information.

The flat “out-and-back” course, which heads toward the Queen Mary and downtown Long Beach, is on the scenic beach bike path.

The 5K (3.1 miles) run/walk starts at 7:00, 8:00, and/or 10:00; 10K (6.2 miles) run/walk begins at 7:00, 8:00, or 9:00 a.m., and the 1/2-Mile Kids’ Fun Run starts at 9:10 a.m. (ages 7 & under) and 9:15 a.m. (ages 8-12). Unfortunately, dogs are not welcome for this particular running and walking event, so please leave them at home!turkeytrot2

This community event is put on by C.A.T., the Community Action Team that was put together as a non-profit organization to promote social well-being among those who live in Long Beach. The event is also sponsored by the Grunion Gazette and Councilman Gary DeLong’s office.

There are charities that will benefit from the race’s proceeds, including food banks who would appreciate donations of canned goods at the event. In fact, in exchange for free beachfront parking on Wednesday and Thursday, all you have to do is bring two non-perishable items.turkeytrot3

The event is putting on a best legs contest with a $500 prize that will be given to the charity or school of your choice!

There is still time to register online! They also are looking for volunteers to help out at the event! This is a great way to show your thanks on Thanksgiving Day by spending it with your community and neighbors before you join your loved ones later for Thanksgiving dinner!

Thanksgiving and Hanukkah Converge for “Thanksgivukkah” for the First Time Since 1888!

thanksLB1The last time Thanksgiving and Hanukkah occurred on the same night was 1888. According to one calculation, this convergence will not happen again for another 77,798 years. This year, November is Thanksgiving and the first full day of the eight-day Jewish festival of lights, which begins at sundown the previous night.fallbeach1

If you practice both, you may be wondering how you can address both holidays on the same feast table and decorate to accommodate both holidays. The design team at Allen’s Flower Market of Long Beach has some tips of making the most of this convergence without making extra work during an already hectic time.

Decorating the Table for Thanksgivvukah

To make the most of both holidays, including acknowledging the traditions and symbols of Thanksgiving and Hanukkah, here are some ways you can integrate both at your dining table and throughout your home.

  • Create individual centerpieces to accompany each place setting or use a single flower like a rose or orchid. Then, add a decorative dreidel to pay homage to Hanukkah as well.falllb5
  • Order small and large centerpieces as well as bouquets to put throughout the family table and on tables in a foyer to welcome guests, using the traditional colors of each holiday in the flower arrangements.
  • Have Allen’s Flower Market of Long Beach take a family heirloom like a vase or bowl and use this as the base for a special holiday flower arrangement.   Hanukkah2
  • Rather than deciding on a menorah versus having a cornucopia – a key symbol of each holiday – why not use both or add something that incorporates both. This could be what many are calling a menurkey. They can be made out of gourds, wood, or metal, paying tribute to the symbols of both holidays.
  • Use candles everywhere as they are important symbols for both holidays. You can put them in the centerpieces as well as set up hurricane candles on sideboards and mantels throughout the home.

Veterans’ Day is November 11th

memorialafm3Veterans’ Day is celebrated on November 11th each year and is a time to reflect on what all those who have served in the many wars have done for our country and for us as citizens.

This blog post provides background on this special day of remembrance and offers some information on some local Long Beach Veterans’ Day events.memorialafm4

Origins and Observance of Veterans’ Day

Veterans’ Day came about as a way to commemorate the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, which ended World War I. The armistice was signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 to end World War I. In 1926, the U.S. Congress recognized it as a special day of prayer and thanksgiving, and it finally became a legal holiday in 1938.

Now, Veterans’ Day is a day for all veterans of all wars with parades and church services. It is also a time to raise our American flags. Some schools and businesses take the day off in respect of this special holiday.memorialafm1

Long Beach Veterans’ Day Events

Long Beach events for Veterans’ Day include many celebrations. First, the Aquarium of the Pacific is honoring all veterans with free admission on Veterans’ Day. Second, the Long Beach Veterans’ Day Parade is Saturday, November 9th at 10am at Atlantic Avenue. These events are two of the many locally planned celebrations to thank local Long Beach veterans.

Flowers for Veterans’ Day

Our Long Beach flower shop features many patriotic themed bouquets, flower arrangements, and memorial arrangements that can be used as gifts and for Veterans’ Day events.memorialafm2

Using a combination of red, white, and blue flowers, we can also create a custom Veterans’ Day arrangement to use as a centerpiece or as a gift for a beloved veteran. We can also design arrangements to use in parades and on floats.

From all of us at Allen’s Flower Market of Long Beach, we want to take this time and thank all of our veterans for their service and commitment to our country.
