Show Your Support for Veteran’s Day

Veteran’s Day is Tuesday, November 11^th, and the city of Long Beach is celebrating this weekend with a special parade and festival. The 18^th Annual Long Beach Veterans Day Parade is Saturday, November 8^th. It is a great way to honor the men and women that have served our country in all branches of the military.

The parade includes close to 100 groups that will march to the theme of “A Salute to Those Who Have Served.” The participants will include local city council members and many veterans who have served in all of the military branches.

The Grand Marshal is Stephen J. Peck who is a veteran of the Vietnam War and heads a group called U.S. Vets, which helps vets find housing and get other essential services. Eric Cornell, a Long Beach police officer and Navy reservist, has been named the parade’s honorary grand marshal

Every year, there is an incredible turnout for this parade and the other festivities that are included in the event. It brings together the community to honor those that have protected our freedom, rights, and country. We look forward to joining in the festivities this weekend and seeing many of those in our community who have served in wars.

Celebrating Grandma and Grandpa with Help from Allen’s Flower Market

As a child, there is something just magical about hitting the road to grandma’s house, it is an adventure really. Anyone who spent their childhood visiting Grandma and Grandpa probably know the routine.

Your parents would drop you off and from that point on you would spoiled incessantly until your parents came to pick you up. While there, you get food and treats mom would never buy; you get to stay up late; you probably get a couple of new toys. Not to mention there is the fact that you are excited by visiting somewhere mysterious and new.

National Grandparents Day

Like moms and dads, our grandparents get their own special day, too. Maybe you knew about this and maybe you didn’t, but either way the holiday is just around the corner. Started in 1978 after three long years of phone calls and petitions to various people in the government, Marian McQuade got what she was after. President Jimmy Carter officially declared the Sunday after Labor Day to be National Grandparents Day.

It all started years before though. Marian rightly believed that the elderly had many things to teach us and that they should be respected. In her home of Oak Hill, West Virginia, she taught the local kids to respect the elderly and even organized ‘Adopt a Grandparent’ events of sorts.

She struggled in her town and state to create such a holiday, but in 1978 it came to be and now even has its own theme song — ‘A Song for Grandma and Grandpa’ was written by Johnny Prill. This song received widespread acclaim, making it the perfect song for the holiday.

While the holiday is a secular national holiday in the United States, the holiday or at least its theme is actually celebrated in various places all over the world. The dates vary and chances are they have a specific song representing it.

The Bells of Ireland: The Luck of a Not-so Irish Flower

An Amusing History Lesson

The luck of the Irish — something that is commonly said and often just blurted out by an individual that may not even be Irish but is insisting on telling the world around him how lucky he is for holding the winning ticket or something of the sort.

Not only is he probably not even Irish, he also very clearly failed history in high school as the Irish historically have not been a very lucky group of people. The amount of things associated with Ireland and good luck is as common as a fast food restaurant here in America and, as irony would have it, there is little to know luck to be found in Ireland.

The same misconceptions go for a flower named after this same country. Guess we should be pretty thankful that the ‘Bells of Ireland’ (Molucella, for those technical folks out there) actually came from Syria. They are referred to as the ‘Bells of Ireland’ in England and a few other countries and as ‘Canterbury Bells’ in New Zealand and Australia.

It is thanks to England that these uniquely beautiful flowers get their meaning of ‘good luck,’ which is even more ironic when you consider the history between England and Ireland. Yet, while looking at the flower, it is easy to see why the flower is so aptly named. Ireland is a very green and very beautiful country just like this flower

Caring for your ‘Bells of Ireland’

The Molucella flower does better in a cool climate when caring for it at home, in the garden, or the shop waiting to sell it. Make sure the flower gets plenty of water. It is also important to keep the flower out of direct sunlight and away from direct heat sources like an oven in the kitchen as it cannot handle the heat.

When growing the plant outside, many find that the ‘Bells of Ireland’ grow best in light sandy soil and in an open space without too much sun or heat but with plenty of water. Take care of the plant and you will see its beautiful bloom in the spring, summer, and fall seasons. When tended to properly, the stem can very well reach up to two feet in height. Its lengthy blooming seasons, stand-out height, and sheer beauty make the ‘Bells of Ireland’ the perfect gift for any flower connoisseur.
